FAQ
What is the difference between "L" grade (e.g., 304L) and standard grade (304) stainless steel?
The "L" stands for Low Carbon (maximum 0.03% carbon). This lower carbon content prevents carbide precipitation during welding, which maintains the flange's corrosion resistance in the "as-welded" condition. It is essential for components that require heavy welding.
Can stainless steel flanges be used with carbon steel pipes?
Technically yes, but it is not recommended due to Galvanic Corrosion. When two dissimilar metals are in contact in the presence of an electrolyte, the less noble metal (carbon steel) will corrode rapidly. If necessary, dielectric isolation kits (insulating gaskets and sleeves) must be used.
What is the significance of the "Schedule" (e.g., SCH 40S) for a Bore Flange?
For Weld Neck and Socket Weld flanges, the "Schedule" determines the internal bore diameter. It must match the schedule of the connecting pipe to ensure a smooth flow transition and prevent turbulence or erosion at the joint.
